چکیده
M e t h o d s Data sources: 7 databases, scientific proceedings, and abstracts of professional associations. Study selection and assessment: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included patients who had bone metastases with or without pain at enrollment, measured pain as an outcome, allowed antineoplastic therapy or rescue pain medications (if available to all patients), and compared bisphosphonates with a control intervention (placebo, no treatment, different types of bisphosphonates, different doses of the same bisphosphonate, or other treatments). Study quality was assessed using the 5-point Jadad scale. Outcomes: Pain relief. Secondary outcomes included dose response of bisphosphonates for reducing pain, quality of life (QOL), and adverse effects (AEs).

Role of bisphosphonates for the management of skeletal complications and bone pain from skeletal metastases.
Bone metastases are common in patients with advanced-stage cancer; they can lead to skeletal complications (ie, pathologic fractures, spinal cord compression, tumor-induced hypercalcemia, and severe bone pain) that often require orthopedic surgery or palliative radiation therapy and negatively affect quality of life. The primary role of bisphosphonates for the management of bone metastases in p...
متن کاملThe use of bisphosphonates in patients with breast cancer.
BACKGROUND Bone is the most common site of breast cancer metastases. Skeletal metastases may be associated with harmful and painful events such as fractures, spinal cord compression, and hypercalcemia. By inhibiting osteoclasts and bone resorption, bisphosphonates can interrupt the process of bone destruction and decrease the risk of skeletal complications. METHODS A review of the literature ...

Although th...
